Accessorizing a room

, ,

One of the quickest ways to change or update a room is by simply changing the accessories in the room.  When accessorizing a good rule to remember is “less is best”.  Accessories add personality and life to a room!   Here are a few tips to keep in mind when accessorizing any room:

  • – Odd number of objects in groupings are more visually appealing than even number
  • – Creating a variety of levels maintains interest (I love using hardcover books without the jackets to add height to objects and books are also one of my favorite accessories!!)
  • – Keep similar collections together
  • – Layering accessories is a great look… remember to layer items from back to front and largest to smallest
  • – When creating an arrangement of objects start with the most important or largest object first and then work from there
  • – Try to view objects with a fresh perspective… look at things upside down, backwards, on their side
  • – Don’t be afraid to mix and match colors, textures, shapes and sizes

A fun exercise that costs absolutely nothing (and one that I love doing myself) is to take all the accessories out of one or multiple rooms in your home.  Place all the accessories in a central location such as a dining room or kitchen table.  And start to put objects together that you’ve never put together before and place them in a new space in the room(s).  Try to come up with new displays for the rooms in your home.  Have fun with it and don’t be afraid to go bold!
