How about making your own decorative shelves?

Here is an idea that I love… adding shelves to a room that you can make in a flash for pennies!  As you can see from the photo, these plywood shelves are suspended to the wall using ribbon in order to create an adorable display for lightweight items that you already have in your home.

In order to create this look, you will need heavy fabric ribbon (approximately 1″ wide), painted plywood shelves (1 -by-6 inch wide… but really use any size that is appropriate for the space), staple gun, screw gun and screws!    Take the ribbon and cut 4 pieces (maybe 36″ long but again play with the size that would look right for the shelf to hang from).  Take one piece of the cut ribbon and bring the ends of the ribbon together then fold the ends over twice.  Attach the folded end of the ribbon to the wall with a screw gun and screw.  Slip the plywood shelf into the ribbon loop so the ribbon is at least 3″ in from the end of the shelf.  Have someone hold that end and then slip another ribbon loop to the other end (remember to come in about 3 inches from the end of the shelf).  Use a level to make sure it’s straight and then screw the second ribbon into the wall.  Adjust the shelf as needed and then secure the ribbons under the shelf with a staple gun so the shelves don’t slip.

You then can use these shelves for lightweights accessories!  To spice things up, get crazy with the ribbon color or pattern as well as the color of the shelf… have fun with it.
